Coachella 2006: Quick Recap
May 2nd, 2006I’ve survived another year of Coachella, and it was once again a weekend well spent. I’ll post all my pics this week and my two cents about the shows, but here’s a quick recap.
I saw: Hybrid, Nine Black Alps, The Walkmen, The Duke Spirit, Animal Collective, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Kanye West, Devendra Banhart, Cat Power, Franz Ferdinand, Depeche Mode, The Rakes, She Wants Revenge, Infadels, Youth Group, Be Your Own Pet, The Dears, Metric, Wolf Parade, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Editors, Mogwai, Massive Attack, The Go! Team, Tool, and Art Brut.
Best set? I have no idea. There were so many good sets that I can’t narrow it down to just one. So I’ll say it’s a tie between The Duke Spirit and Metric.
The Duke Spirit because I had never heard of them until a few days before the show, and because the lead singer is a cross between Bjork and PJ Harvey backed by a kickass band. They played with a lot of heart, the bassist even playing with his arm in a sling from an injury. Sadly, not that many folks showed up to see them even though they played the main stage. Jim and I both bought their CD to show them some love.
Metric because, well, they just all out rocked. A completely solid performance all around with a good mix of tracks from their new and old stuff. Their song “Monster Hospital” came across huge live. I was particularly excited to see them since I had bailed on seeing them twice in Chicago because of my own lameness (show’s too late, night’s too cold). I was a fool then, but I’m better now. I’ll see them any time they play Chicago in the future.
More details later this week after I’ve shaken the lack of sleep and caught up with my emails.
