Reinventing the Wheel
May 19th, 2005I’ve been threatening to redesign my site for about a year now, and I keep putting it off. I’d like to redesign it for a couple of reasons. Primarily, because it’s had the same design for an awfully long time. But also, I’d like to have a few more things on my home page. Things like upcoming concerts, music recently added to my iPod, and the abilty for folks to post comments (not that I’m expecting much more than snarky comments from people i know – you know who you are).
So I’m thinking of switching to my totally-manual Dreamweaver site to a Blogger-hosted site. There are certainly advantages – Blogger takes care of a lot of the details for maintaining a blog. And while I can manipulate the layout with CSS, I would have to handle my design portfolio and some others things differently. I could maintain a little popup window on my own server that would act as a small modular Flash portfolio. I could also keep my Flickr account updated to host photos I’ve taken. But if I’m maintaining a Blogger site, my own Flash portfolio, and little bits of content on a few other sites – am I saving myself effort, or just creating more work?
